The year 2021 will be an important one for the American Silver Eagle coin series. Not only is it the 35th anniversary
of this landmark program, the American Silver Eagles
will undergo a design change mid-year. For the first portion of the
year, the Silver Eagles
will maintain their original obverse and reverse designs (i.e. the
exact same designs used in 2020). However, at some point in the middle
of the year, the reverse will change to an all-new design. In essence
there will be two reverse designs: a “Type 1” and “Type 2” version.
The
exact timing of the change has not yet been released, which may result
in a low mintage for either the Type 1 or Type 2 designs. Regardless of
exactly when the changeover takes place, the 2021 mintage's will be split – thus creating two lower-mintage editions.
